Turpentine is a yellow or brownish oleoresin, depending on the origin of the tree (usually softwoods) from which it is extracted. Turpentine essential oil is obtained through distillation. There are various types of turpentine, depending on the origin of the donor tree. This one comes from Maritime Pine, a tree found in the Mediterranean rim that can grow 30 metres tall and live for 500 years. Quite common in France, Spain, Italy and Portugal, it is easily identifiable by its reddish and black bark, which develops cracks over time. Turpentine essential oil is used to temporarily relieve joint and muscle pain related to backache, strains, bruises, sprains and arthritis pain.
