Eucalyptus peppermint trees are not native to South Africa. They originate from Australia, where eucalyptus species evolved to thrive in dry climates and poor soils. During the late 19th and early 20th centuries, eucalyptus trees were introduced to South Africa by European settlers for timber, windbreaks, shade, and essential oil production. Peppermint-scented eucalyptus varieties became especially valued for their aromatic leaves and medicinal uses. Over time, these trees adapted well to South African conditions and are now widely found in plantations and rural landscapes.
