Known as Cymbopogon and originally found in Asia, this herbaceous species includes some fifty known varieties which are now native to tropical climes. In addition to being known for its scent, it is also widely used in cooking and for medicinal purposes. Do not confuse East Indian Lemongrass with Melissa officinalis L which is a perennial plant in the Lamiaceae botanical family.
